I saw a sign at my store last week about limiting Register Reward items. Here’s what it said:
Attention Customers!
Due to an increase of coupon shopping, we are implementing certain limits on Register Rewards and coupon items. In fairness to our customers:
- We are now limiting one Register Reward printed per customer per week for each deal.
- We are limiting buy one get one FREE coupons with buy one get one FREE ad prices, which is a total of four per customer per week.
- All other items will be subject to the limit set in the ad.
- Walgreens reserves the right to limit quantities on all items.
All Register Reward items are limited quantity, and are sold on “first come, first served” basis. We are sorry that we cannot place any Register Reward items on hold for customers.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
What do you think of these new limits? Do you have limits in place at your stores? Let us know in the comment section below.

Can’t help but think Extreme Couponing had something to do with this…

That was my first thought too, Tammy! Glad I’m not the only one who thought that. 🙂

If it comes to it I have more than 1 Walgreens within 10 miles radius. No card like CVS so no way to limit me. I have never been a shelf clearer so not worried about it. And I definitely believe Extreme Couponing is driving this.

Just tried to use an Advil/Thermacare coupon ($4 off/2) and use the RR for additional savings. They would not give me both, the manager said that RR are just like a manufacturer coupon and since I had already used one they could not do both. Too bad, it would have been a great deal….
Frugal Finders: Mitchell says
In order to be able to use the RR, you would’ve needed a filler item. Fillers are inexpensive items such as candy, pencils and clearance items, which allow you to use more coupons at checkout. Walgreens in ad coupons do NOT count towards your coupon to item ratio.
If you try this with a filler item and they still don’t let you use the RR, I would print a copy of the Walgreens coupon policy and show that to the manager. It says “The number of manufacturer coupons, including RR manufacturer coupons, must not exceed the number of items in the transaction.”
Jason says
Thank you for that information Mitchell. I had no idea that I’d need a filler!

ShelfClearers procuring large quantities of coupon inserts, for free, is where the shelf clearing starts. Stand up and do something!!!!!!
Illegal acquisition of coupon inserts must be stopped.
Please call and report these issues to :

Valassis (distributes Red Plum) 800.437.0479
CIC Coupon Information Corporation (703) 684-5307
Don’t forget to contact P&G , local newspaper offices, store managers and district managers.
Write the board of directors! The shelf clearers do!
We have to report newspaper carriers who are selling inserts and the inside staff. Those coupons are supposed to be under lock and key. Very few have access to them.
It’s not that hard to track.
1,000 perfect inserts don’t show up in a dumpster each week per shelf clearer.
Please do your homework and report.
People steel peelies and then couponers run and buy the stolen items from the thief ON EBAY.
Hey which spelling is correct anyways? Peeliesteelers or peeliestealers
Same thing with tear pad thieves. The take whole tearpads, sell them on Ebay and people go PAY for this stolen item.
Newspaper carriers, newspaper staff, and others steal coupons then sell them through clipping services. This is illegal and starts the fraud ball rolling.
It always amazes me that people complain about not getting their coupons in their paper but then are the first to say go to the crook wholesalers to get them guaranteed.
Nothing like a crook with a guarantee I guess?!
Where do you think coupon sellers, coupon clippers, ebay coupon sellers get their coupons????
Hmmmmmmmmmmm

My walgreens has a sign & limits like that. But, at the last day of the ad you can buy whatever qty you want. They want it to be fair that all customers have the opportunity to get the free stuff. Im okay with that. Why does anybody need 30 toothpastes anyways! That would expire long before you could use it!

I decided to go to walgreens tonight at 11 and the main item that i wanted was 10 sobe waters. Anyways when the rude manager walked by an isle that i was in she yelled out “there is a limit on those”. I asked her why and she said that she has the right to put a limit on certain things, than she said that she wont let me take all the sobe waters in stock. I told her i only wanted 10, there were like maybe 30 more sobe waters still in the cooler! I than walked up to her and she was on the phone i couldnt hear what she was saying but by the time i got up to her she had hung up the phone and i asked her why she wont let me buy 10 sobe waters and she said “because i can put a limit on them and im not letting you buy 10, you can only buy four” and so i asked her what her name was and i wrote it down and than she proceeded to ask me if i wanted her to go get the customer complaint number because she would be happy to write it down for me. She was just a complete snot about it!! I re-read the coupon and no where on the coupon is there a limit on how many i wanted to buy this is what the coupon read

Also never once did i mention that i wanted the register rewards or anything like that. All i asked was where the sobewaters were and she right away assumed i was gonna take advantage of the RR’s, What if i actually wanted 10 sobewaters and i was gonna pay full price for them not knowing about the register rewards??? If i wanted 10 of something at full price can she really put a limit on what i can buy since im paying full price and dont have any coupons or RR’s?? I hope you understand what im getting at. Anyways she was just a big you know what and thats what got me mad because she talked to me so rudely. I just read the coupon policy and i guess im not really familiar with it and so is there something in the policy that indicates that she can put a limit on items with RR’s or any item in the store? I wasnt going to use my register rewards tonight so i wouldnt have paid with anything but money!!
Please tell me that i actually have a case her and that i have a right to call in and complain about her and that she actually did something wrong!!! This is the 2nd time she has been rude to me in 3 weeks, i have had it with her!!!!!!!! What would you do???
Frugal Finders: Mitchell says
I’m so sorry about your experience at Walgreens! This is exactly what my store does too. They do have the right to limit quantities, but if you didn’t care about the Register Rewards, I don’t see why they would.
You definitely do have a case! If I were in your shoes, I would first call corporate and complain. I also would seriously consider if you want to continue shopping at Walgreens if you aren’t being treated respectfully. I would then take the Walgreens ad to Walmart or Target and price match it there, so that rude store doesn’t get your business. 🙂
Vaness says
All stores have the right to impose any limit they deem necessary. In my area, Pepsi Co. ran out of SoBe to distribute so that may have been the reason they were limiting at your store. It doesn’t matter whether you were interested in the RR or not, they don’t limit quantities just to limit you or because they think you’re being greedy, they impose limits so that other customers have a fair shot at getting them, RR or not. However, the employee shouldn’t have been rude to you, you should bust her for that, especially if it has happened more than once.

I was at walgreens tonight and was limited on rr coupons, only 2 per deal per week. I was sad to hear of the limit, but ok with it. You are also limited to making two seperate transactions a day, so I was told. Then the manager told me I was commiting coupon fraud because I bought fish oil w/ a mfc for 8.00, shampoo w/ a mcf for 1.99, and a chick of sea w/ a mfc for 19c. So my total was 10.18 and I got a piece of candy so that I had an item without a mfc. So my total was over 10.00 and because I tried to use a rr for 10.00, he said that was fraud cause I was trying to use a mfc (rr) on a piece of candy. The rr says 10.00 off ur next shopping trip, not ur next item of 10.00 or more. I don’t get it.
Frugal Finders: Mitchell says
Sherri, you did nothing wrong there! The manager doesn’t know what he’s talking about. You needed a filler item in order to use the $10 RR which you had. It doesn’t matter what you buy as long as you get to $10 before taxes.
Vaness says
That manager needs to check the coupon policy. There was nothing wrong with that transaction.
Vaness says
Unless your total BEFORE tax was less than $10. Your PRE-tax total must be more than $10.
